Dr. Shawna Tyler, BSc(Kin), DC

base_icon_white_background.png

Dr. Shawna Tyler was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta where she completed her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology with distinction from the University of Alberta. While completing her undergraduate degree she competed as a national-level track and field heptathlete as a member of the UofA varsity team.

Shawna completed her Doctor of Chiropractic cum laude with clinic honours from Toronto's Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in 2005. Soon after graduating, Dr. Tyler returned to Alberta and opened her own clinic in Calgary practicing in that community for 14 years.

Newly married in 2017 and blessed with a beautiful newborn son in 2018, Shawna and her new family relocated to the Okanagan, in the heart of interior BC, seizing an opportunity to raise her family and serve people in this incredible community.

As a high performance athlete, Shawna developed first-hand understanding of the debilitating effects of ongoing pain as she suffered from chronic low back pain from an early age. Her history of successful rehabilitation in her chiropractic practice and personal experience has strengthened her belief that everyone can have a life free of limitations and free of pain.

Shawna's approach toward treatment is three-fold: one part detective work, one part physical skill, and one part connection.

Taking the time to listen and understand the broader perspective and root cause of injury, Shawna draws on her extensive experience to determine the best course of treatment. Treatments often combine chiropractic manipulation and soft-tissue therapies including Active Release Technique (ART), Graston Technique and Kinesiotaping.

Shawna believes in empowering people by teaching them the nature of their condition, outlining her treatment game plan in a simple way, and sharing simple tools and practical techniques to help patients participate in their own recovery.

SERVICES

Joint Manipulation & Mobilization

Chiropractic joint manipulation is a manual therapy that involves applying a gentle force through a joint in order to restore full range of motion and ideal function. It has been shown to be effective in the treatment of headaches and neck and low back pain, among other conditions.

Active Release Technique (ART)

Active Release Technique (ART) is a patented, state-of-the-art soft tissue system that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and effectively with ART. At the most basic level, ART works by breaking up scar tissue, muscle adhesions and restrictions, muscular spasm and tightness. The mechanism by which it does this is for the examiner to put a muscle in its most shortened position (through movement of the nearby joints), then apply a tension with his/her thumb or fingers, and while maintaining that tension he/she will lengthen the muscle throughout its range of motion. In this way, any adhesions or scar tissue is broken up along the entire length of the muscle.

Graston Technique

Graston Technique ® (GT) is a unique, evidence-based form of instrument- assisted soft tissue mobilization that enables clinicians to effectively and efficiently address soft tissue lesions and fascial restrictions. GT uses specially designed stainless steel instruments with unique treatment edges and angles to deliver an effective means of manual therapy and diagnosis. The use of GT instruments, when combined with appropriate therapeutic exercise, leads to the restoration of pain-free movement and function.

Kinesiotaping

Kinesiotaping is a taping technique that gives support and stability to your joints and muscles without limiting circulation and range of motion. Through the use of an elastic tape placed on the skin overlying muscles and joints, it can be used for preventive maintenance, limiting swelling, and pain management.
